How to: Academic Discourse


Throughout the academic year, students will have many opportunities to "participate as knowledgeable, reflective, creative, and critical members" of our class as they learn, develop and refine their discussion skills. Formal whole class discussions and literature circle group discussions will be scored using the rubric below (NCTE: 12 Standards).

 

Scoring Rubric for Academic Discourse: Student performance during formal discussions is assessed throughout each grading term resulting in one cumulative score.

LITERACY THROUGH THINKING Indicates understanding and respect of others' points of view. Indicates accurate understanding of others' points of view. Indicates adequate understanding of others' points of view. Indicates minimal understanding of others' points of view. Indicates no understanding of others' points of view.
LITERACY THROUGH SPEAKING Thoughtfully participates in discussion on a regular basis. Participates in class discussions regularly. Participates in class discussions. Rarely participates in class discussions or only when called on. Does not regularly participate in class discussions.
LITERACY THROUGH READING Reflects a developing, engaged and in-depth understanding of the text(s). Reflects a developing and engaged understanding of the text(s). Reflects an adequate but limited understanding of the text(s). Reflects a minimal and disengaged understanding of the text(s). Does not reflect or fails to make a  meaningful effort to understand text(s).
SELF-DIRECTED LEARNER Actively and unilaterally seeks academic assistance when needed. Seeks assistance when needed or prompted. Does not seek assistance.
